Just before Thanksgiving we went to this U-Pick farm in Tattnall County to get sweet potatoes for our holiday meals.
We were able to drive right to the field. I'm saying this because some people don't know that sweet potatoes grow under the ground. The plant blooms and then starts dying back and after that the potatoes are dug out of the ground (before the first frost)

The Little Package went right to work.
These two "sweet taters" had fun filling our bucket. (I helped too) We had sweet potato casserole for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We had baked sweet potatoes, fried sweet potatoes, sweet potato pudding, sweet potato souffle, sweet potato pie, sweet potato bread, candied sweet potatoes, sweet potato cookies and sweet potato fries...well you get the picture!
Sweet potatoes are not only good but they are good for you! Georgia used to be second in the USA in sweet potato production but I think they fall way back on the list now.

Wow, you can use them for a lot of things. U-pick farm sounds very funny, so far I haven't seen a sign like that here.

I like to mash the sweet potato with the ordinary potato.
Goodness, no, I have never seen that many sweet potatoes. We used to raise them, but just enough for us.
I never had sweet potatoes until I came to this country. I like them a lot – I usually make a dish at Thanksgiving which is called Tipsy Sweet Potatoes. They are cooked then you pour a sauce made with Bourbon on them and sprinkle with pecans. It’s really good.
Wow so many sweet potatoes. We tried growing some last year and didn't have any luck. We're trying again and hopefully we'll get some.

I wish we could grow sweet potatoes here. Well, some people do...but they are not the same, I fear.
That's a lot of potatoes. I can remember my mom having a sweet potato vine growing in a jar because she thought the vine was pretty.
Oh how neat, Dot.... I LOVE sweet taters.. We eat them alot --in lieu of bakers!!!! I have never been somewhere to pick my own. How special is that. Thanks for sharing.

I did not know it was possible to cook so many things with sweet potatoes!!even cookies?!...Here we have U-pick farms for apples in autumn.
This looked like fun and taters as far as the eye can see! I love sweet potatoes. How many pounds did you pick to make all those delicious meals? :) I've only picked cherries before and would've loved to tried this.
I have never seen sweet potatoes growing. What a bumper crop of them! We grow ornamental versions as vines in our hanging baskets in the summer.
Must be great fun to actually pick sweet potatoes from the fields.
Does Georgia grow other crops now instead of sweet potato?
Yum, yum, I love sweet potatoes. I'd love to find a field like that. We grew some one summer and they were wonderful!

dot, I realy missed your blog. Glad youre back. I love sweet taters to, "Sweet potatoe Souffle" is my favorite. My daughter-in law makes it for almost every family gathering we have. She puts Pecans in it. Yum, Yum.
