Big Black Beetle
My husband brought this to me in a styrafoam cup one day. He told me he thought it was a tumble turd beetle. I thought he was trying to be funny but when I looked it up I found that there really is such a thing. However, I couldn't find a picture of one so I'm not sure if this is really a tumble turd beetle.

Oh that looks pretty creepy,to me they look like roaches yuck!!!
Well, it IS a beetle! Good closeup...perhaps a little too close!
Your title for this one is just about the best understatement I've seen lately.
Thanks for visiting my blog!
Morn~in Dot
and yes there is a tumble bug, They like to roll poo in aball and roll it around, :)
Save the tumble turd is my cry today!
Actually, the correct term or name for it is "Dung Beetle" and when I was a kid, and cows and horses were everywhere, there used to be lots of them. They do roll round balls of fresh dung, dig a hole, more or less, put the dung ball inside the hole and they have already laid an egg in the dung that will hatch and eat the dung before coming out of the hole. Something like that.
If you type "Dung Beetle" on Yahoo or Google search in "images" you will see lots of pictures. They roll them with their back legs and head to the ground.
I have seen this type of bug before but never heard a name for it. A bug is a bug to me. Nice shot though and so close up.
I don't like the looks of that bug.Don't think that I would like a close encounter with it.
Nasty!! lol. ;)
Great photo of the bug. I've seen dung beetles on tv but don't remember if they look like this. Good luck identifying it.
Have a terrific Tuesday.

That is one nastly looking beetle!
Dot, did you put some of this in the glue for your envelopes and then invite your husband to lick them? Can you tell I just read your profile question and answer?
Yeah, nice shot,in fact a brill shot... Reminds me when I was a kid, I had a game called BETTLE DRIVE, you threw a dice and whatever number you got you built your bettle up.

Another creept crawly thing. You have so many!
All I can say Dot is "Ewww, gross!" I'm glad that thing isn't crawling near me :)
EEWWYEWWW.....yuck...it is the ugliest bug regardless of what it is called!!! I learn so much through the blogging world but the bugs.....yeech. And just gross if they roll poo in a ball and roll it around....perhaps why they are pretty low on the food chain...
I know this is necroposting, but none of the earlier posts correctly identified the beetle in the photograph as the African black beetle (Heteronychus arator), which has made its way to the American South after making a nuisance of itself in Australia. This is not a good guy. The grubs can devastate one's lawn.
I just found one of these nasty things on my porch here in GA- I'm not a fan. He was trying to get in my sliding glass door and made enough noise to make me think somebody was trying to break in! They fly too! Gross.
I found one in my laundry room, must have entered through my doggie door. Don't know where it would have come from as i live in city limits and there are no livestock to have poop for it to thrive. i'm just glad to know that's what it is. i unloaded a can of raid on it and tossed in on concrete so that in morning i can get a good look at it. oh, i did cover it so that it can't get away. keep you posted. thanks all and good night.
I found that bug for my project but can't identify it. Good luck=-O
This is known as a Triceratops beetle (Phileurus truncatus), not the African Black beetle as was stated above. I went through page after page trying to identify this thing for an insect collection for a Biology class.
