Red-bellied Woodpecker

This woodpecker has been coming to my feeder for several months but every time I tried to get close enough to the window to get his picture he flew away. I guess he got tired of the game because he let me get these pictures today.
When I was a kid we'd say a little rhyme "red headed woodpecker sittin on a fence. Tried to make a dollar out of fifteen cents"

That is a really pretty bird! And you took that through the window - wow your good! We had a very large woodpecker last summer in our yard - but I wasn't able to get a close shot- good job!

I have never seen a woodpecker this close up. We have them all around here but they are usually pecking on a tree. I was not aware they would go to a feeder. I thought they just ate wood. LOL

Oh, such a pretty bird... I just did a little post about a woodpecker. Great pictures. We have one around here that keeps tapping on the metal roof... day after day! sigh... LOL

That is a wonderful collage of your woodpecker friend. I'm not sure I've ever seen one in those colors. Definitely a great capture!

Dot, great shots..
Red-bellied woodpeckers are noisy birds, and have many varies calls. Often, these woodpeckers "drum" to attract mates. I watched one woodpecker to tap on aluminum roofs, and hollow trees to communicate with potential partners.

Great shots! Why is it red-bellied when it is his head that is red?

Wow, those are gorgeous photos. I only have the downy. it's fascinating me how their backs are so similar yet their heads are so different. I hope to see these someday.

This is the first time at looking at these I can see where the name comes from.. why not Red Headed I don't know ha!
These are a beautiful bird, on my travels around the blog world today it seems many of us had the chance to capture the local bird life.. I'll post my captures from Saturday morning at the feeders tonight.

I am SO impressed. Really. And envious. Dear friends have a home in rural Connecticut and I love going there on weekends #1 because the view from the deck is amazing, I have a zillion photos of it BUT they also have several bird feeders which attract lots of interesting birds .. and a few small redheaded woodpeckers which are camera shy and sense me as soon as I pick up the camera, I dont even need to get near a window .. LOL .. but I will keep trying and one day I too will have such a fabulous shot.. I hope

Impressive and almost unbelievable
Not only one shot, but a few.
Your camera cannot be more than inches from your finger all the time

Just like in Abe's post, beautiful colors.

What a nice red cap he has!! We don't get that kind of woodpecker over here....I think the one we have are called Downy Woodpecker. There's one who has been hanging around our backyard..can always tell he's around by the noise he makes on the trees! lol xox

You must a camera on a tripod continuously pointing at that bird feeder to get such great pictures!

DOT, great wood packer photos. I wish I could have a home where I could live among the beautiful nature. Anyway what kind of camera you use?

Cheers,

I'm so jealous! This is a beautiful bird! There haven't been too many birds around here lately. It's been pretty cold and my bird feeder was full of snow. I guess I should've cleaned it up for them :)

He is so beautiful!! I have a Downey Woodpecker that visits my suet feeder and I caught a quick glimpse of another woodpecker that I think was a Red-bellied last week. I think I'll set out sunflower seeds and see if I can get him to come again!
