Hop A Train

I took my mother to a beauty shop that was located right by a railroad track. While she was getting her hair done I heard a train coming so I ran to my car and grabbed the camera. I saw an engine coming that I had never seen before and I thought "oh boy, my lucky day"! Just as I raised the camera to try and get a shot a CSX came from the opposite direction and blocked the view of the other train. You can see the blue of one of the cars. I guess I can say that was a "bad hair day"!

When I was younger I always wanted to "hop a train". Anyone else ever want to do that?

Hopping a train... one of my favorite scenes in "O Brother, Where Art Thou":

"Excuse me - might any of you boys be smithies or otherwise skilled in the metalurgic arts?"

I don't think that I'd like to hop a train - although I would like to ride one from coast to coast...First class. haha

I think that it's a fun photo, Dot. Sometimes photos turn out even better due to the unexpected, don't they? :) I do like the blue on the other train...very nice.

I think it might be fun to hop a train, although I would never have enough guts to do it. Fun photo and blog. Thanks for sharing.

I think I'd rather walk along the tracks, stay close to home with those I love.

Why complain - I think it was a great shot! And, no, being the son of a railway man I wouldn't have dared...

Ps Thanks for nice greetings!

I have hopped a few in my time Dot in my younger days. Some of our trains had guard vans on the back but never had guards in them.. that was just pefect for an adventure.. we were lucky never to have been caught. It was fun but sometimes we went a lot further than we wanted.. once it took two days to get back home.. I was around 13 at the time... my mother clipped more than my wings when I got home.. ha! happy days.

Neat post Dot... I liked the hair comment

I would be scared to hop a train. I am still laughing thinking about you RUNNING to get your camera. I am sure that is just a figure of speech.....or did you literally RUN to get your camera?

Ok, I hurried. I walked very fast. So you think I can't run? Want to set up a race on the courthouse square? lol

Oh, a familiar sight. My grandparents live close to a railroad track. Never wanted to hop one, though.

As a kid I thought it would be cool. Now I know the risks....and no way! ;)

For me it's the whistle... That long, soulful, wailing whistle first heard from a distance ~ growing more shrill and urgent as it passes by (sigh).

I've never hopped a train but when I was a kid we used to play by the train tracks all the time. There was a train yard in my town in NJ and we had many hours of fun playing there - not that our parents new!

The same thing happened to me this past week. There was a train that had just passed and anther came with the engine in view and the train that had just passed backed up! Then just yesterday, n another part of town, I heard the train whistle and saw the signal go down for cars. Not a car in sight but soon as I aimed my camera for the coming train, there were all kinds of cars that blocked my clear shot.

Your photo tells a story tho of the missed shot. . . and beautiful color of the train! Maybe next time!

I've never hopped a train, but have taken many passenger train rides. Mostly to the sea when I was a child. I love train travel, and have fond memories .

The railroad is a thing of the past in our town. A few years ago the ripped up the CNR rail line through our town. It was the main trans-Canada line. There is still the CPR line south of here. We used to have a station. The only grocer in town used to make up orders for the logging camps and hunt camps up the line and put them on the train. During the Depression, men riding the rails got off and people gave them a free meal. There was also the school rail car that brought education to the children for a few weeks before moving on to another railroad town. It was a different time but it was the train that made Canada possible, and opened up the North to exploration and settlement.

Now the rail access is to become part of the Trans-Canada Trail sytem.

I don't think I would want to hop a train, but when I was a child my grandmother had tracks at the back of her yard. Every time the train came I made her run me outside so I could watch it go by.
Sorry you didn't get the shot of the train you wanted, but I really like the one in the photo. The grafetti stands out and makes it a colorful photo.

great shot of the graffiti train though...so pretty worthwhile.

I hopped a few trains in my childhood..running away from home. Stupid. It was so easy to fall under the wheels and lose a leg or be killed. But... it seemed worth it at the time...... the police kept bringing me home. I never did get far enough til I was older....

Hi Dot, trains have never been my favorite mode of transport, except for short distances. I get board and want to get off to stretch my legs. Our local narrow guage railway jaunt, the Apple Express is fun, it stops regularly and you are able to get out and enjoy the scenery. It has lost its charm now as they no longer use the old steam engines, but a diesel locomotive.
