This butterfly was landing on our blackberry plants yesterday while I was mowing. The noise of the mower didn't seem to bother it at all and it even stuck around while I ran for the camera.
Just gorgeous! We saw that kind of butterfly for the first time last summer. I'm glad you posted about the blackberry bushes too...I planted one a few years ago and it's kind of going crazy. Should I trim it back in the fall? Also, several new plants are coming up through the grass near the main plant, should I just leave them? Last year the birds ate the few berries that ripened, so I'm hoping this year is better! ~Kelli
Great shot of the butterfly. So how long have the blackberries been in bloom? Usually we have blackberry winter after they bloom. Was this last cold snap we had blackberry winter?
Kelli, we leave the new plants that come up. I pruned the bushes when the new leaves started coming on this spring. You can tell which ones to prune..they are the dead looking ones. Tony fertilized them around the first of April. Andrea, Tony said the last cold snap was blackberry winter. The bushes just started blooming this week.
What a great shot, you are so lucky to even have the thought of blackberry patch growing. We woke up too an inch of snow. Would really love to send you some snow.
wonderful shots! I am also enjoying all the great wheel shots that are being posted over on Picture This. I have a request, could you edit the template so that links show up in a colour that contrasts with the text? Often you don't know a link is there unless your cursor accidentally crosses it! Thanks for the great idea, are you having fun cooking up all sorts of future topics? (mind you, I have enough wheels to keep posting for months, it is a nice theme because there is so much scope for variety :)
Hi Dot, I liked the photos, but just the mention of blackberries made my mouth water. Hot blackberry cobbler with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream and a hot cup of coffee. ummmmm. :o)
Love the shot of the butterfly . His color looks like a blackberry. We have major problems with blackberries, they grow wild here and are not cutlivated as a crop, except for specialty berries.
What terrific photos, one day I'll have a camera that is capable of such nice shots! It's our annual Variety Show time here. I sing in the chorus and I'm in one dance number, pics are posted on my blog. Shall I save you a couple of seats?
Simply exquisite! You were lucky to get it -- YOU MEAN you don't wear your camera around your neck while you are mowing the lawn? YOU MEAN you take time to mow the lawn and don't spend all your time on the computer? hehehehehe
Wow....this is FABULOUS, Dot. Butterflies are on of my favorite subjects! I love these black ones with a hint of blue....we have a lot of these....I think they are some type of swallowtail, but not sure.

What a shot. That is so beautiful. It is so breath taking when you get a chance to see nature up close.
I am back and ready to roll. I shot a whole bunch of great photos today. Keep checking back if you have time.
As unusual, a great series of photos you have here.

Gorgeous as always.

Great contrast of black and white!
Those are absolutely gorgeous!
Brilliant timing, Dot.
Great contrast. Love the clarity in foreground with the soft focus in the back. Best picture I've seen all year. Here by way of Pappy's Balderdash.
I suppose he liked his picture taken now didn't he? Unlike my 6-year-old son... (smile)
