Just north of Folkston, Georgia two major CSX train lines converge and funnel approximately 60 trains through Folkston each day. Most of the freight trains from the eastern half of the USA go through Folkston to go to and from Florida. There are also several Amtrak passenger trains that pass through each day.The town built this viewing stand where railfans can sit and watch the trains go by. The stand is equipped with lights, ceiling fans, and a scanner to listen to radio traffic between the trains. Nearby are picnic tables with grills and restrooms.
About eight trains went through during the two hour period we were there. Unfortunately they were all CSX trains. It was boring but also fun. If I ever get a chance to go back I'd like to spend the day and take some reading or handwork to do while waiting for the trains.
Folkston is located in south east Georgia.
I like the grafitti on this one. It made me think of the Dixie Chick's song " Good Bye Earl".

Very interesting post Dot. I love the black and white pictures. I will have to show this to my grandson since he loves trains. We need to take him to Folkston Funnel sometime.
Love your trains. I'm especially fond of B&W photos. I think the first one I saw when visiting your site for the first time was a sepia one... very nice Dot. Here in Little Rock the incessant truck traffic on Interstate 40 is what gives people pause. There's no viewing station to watch those trucks, though, but one can't escape their noise.
What a neat idea. Not only can you enjoy watching the trains but make it a picknick in the country while you do. :) and there are ceiling fans too?? amazing.

I think it would be fun to go on a trip by train and just sit by the window and look out. Maybe someday.
the trains make me think when all our products were moved by train. no doubt a cheaper way than trucks. i like the view from look out mountian. i have a gospel disk and on it is a song sung by mark somebody. it is amazing. just the song Jesus loves me but he does a good job.
It was very fitting to make those pictures in black and white. It gives a nostalgic look that pleases an old railway-fan like myself.
I have a strong affection for veteran railways and spent much of our summer vacation in the north of England last year looking at them and travelling by them. Maybe I'll post a picture or two someday.

You had asked about the "frames" around my shots...I didn't put them there...they are there from the blogger site - I guess mine are black because my site is black.
You have them too...they are just the same color as your background. Does that make sense??
If you have Photoshop Elements...there is a way to add frames to the pictures.
Really a nice post. I like trains, especially the old steam engines. And I can't tell you the amount of money (in pennies) I have laid on the track to see what happens when the train rolls over them. And I don't have a single one anywhere to look at.

I am SO sorry you could not hear the music on my blog today, I just removed it from my blog . Why? because 1 person (Blogreader) said the vid (went over the slide-show) was disturbing her, and another said that the music was disturbing her , so I do not want to irritate anyone by my blog.
I might try to add the son again, but only with the possibility that anyone is able to shut the music on or off.

Dot, this is an interesting post, even better in B/W the trains are good stuff too, also the buildings.
Its nice to see trains, i often thought it would be fun to take a train ride across country, a couple of yrs ago i had a lady that stayed here at the motel and that is what she as doing.She said that there is so much more scenery to see in a train.

What a novel idea! I taught a boy in Kindergarten three years ago that would love that special train viewing spot -- he is nuts about trains!
I agree with you about bringing something and staying longer. What a photo op!
