There are many things of beauty in the deep south and I think a cotton field is one of them! When I was growing up I liked to do things to earn spending money. I picked cotton once and I chopped it another time. Today they use machines for everything. You see a cotton field that has been picked by a machine and half the cotton is still there. If it was my field I'd be out there trying to get the rest of the cotton! I recently took pictures of cotton fields in south Georgia and north Alabama that had already been picked. I was happy to find this beautiful field in south Alabama that had not been picked.

Hi Dot. I like the looks of cotton and the environment of King Cotton but nowadays it has been left to machines and fading memories. I like your photograph and narrative a lot.
The idea of picking cotton reminded me that we used to pick tomatoes here every summer for from between 7 and 10 cents a hamper. If you know what a hamper is (the skinny bushel basket that is tapered something like a funnel) then you know how backbreaking that job would be and it was.
It is hard for me to imagine the cotton becoming thread for the spinning wheel. The cotton is pretty and ugly at the same time.
This is a first for me.. never seen one of these plants or fields before.
To think our town here in the UK grew because of cotton.. What was once picked over there was spun over here in the big cotton mills. Hyde owes it's growth from a small hamlet into a large market town off the back of cotton and its pickers.
Hey Ma .They have been pickin cotton here left & right over the past 2 weeks. I've seen some pretty cotton. Last week the prices were doing OK but I am afraid it will end up like pecans & the bottom will fall out. I dont know how farmers make it.....we will be giving our pecans away this year. Makes me want to chop the trees down & use them for firewood! Love ya
Cotton, peanuts and pecans are the agricultural products I most associate with the deep south. Are there others I should add, Dot?

Oh i like cotton fields as well, don't have any around here.I think picking them by hand was hard work back in the old days.

Looks like snow on the plants:-) I've never seen a real cotton field before and the only time I've seen the cotton is when my parents had gone to Florida and on the way there they had stopped to pick one of the cotton pieces to bring home! xox

At first glance, I thought that it was snow, lol. That is what we get sometimes here in Canada when nice wet snow falls on the corn fields. Very nice photography. Anna :)
